Right guys, I'm thick skinned and ready to be slated!

I am admittedly a fairweather rider but itchin to get back on the bike. I fancy commuting to work its a 14 mile round trip and fairly easy going. What should I be wearing at this time of year to make it a comfortable ride?

High Vis, lights, helmet etc is not what I mean :-)

2-3 layers should keep you warm enough.

I'd be wearing on my road-bike:

Proper padded cycle-longs or equivalent - winter Bib-longs are fab, or cycle-shorts under Ron-hill bikesters
Clipless cycle-shoes with Neoprene overshoes
Thermal base layer
Winter long-sleeve cycle jersey
Outer shell layer

There are however many alternatives! Layers are the thing, you certainly need something windproof and waterproof then inner layers to keep out the cold, but they must allow sweat out too. At this time of year the weather can be very unpredictable, so be prepared for the worst!

Get a Polartec beanie or a buff to wear under your helmet, if you wear one. If you don't, sneak into ASDA and get a thicker beanie cheaper. Get another buff for your neck. With those items, your morale will improve. Goodbye cold ears, goodbye cold neck.

Get some warm socks, and some shoes/overshoes that keep the wet out.

Get some dog's danglies gloves.

Get the highest-rated thermal tights and vest from Helly Hansen. If you shop around, they may still cost about £30 each.

You may get lucky at Lidl, but they never seem to have bike stuff when I'm around.

Take the advice of all the posts above.

Stay warm.

Interesting mental picture. What on earth are these?

+1
I think Cotswold Outdoors has the HH Lifa base layer set (both top and bottom) for £30 at the moment. I got one last year and wore it through the snow and ice and it kept me warm!

Dude, you're in Perth. I was no A level geography student but surely the answer is a pair of shorts, string vest and one of those hats with corks on?

Hang on, isn't there a place in the uk called perth..........
