What to wear on cycle trips

I recently went on a bike trip to Lonavala with a bunch of my friends. I was riding my new Cannondale Badboy as I usually do in the city in my normal posture. On the way back, I noticed some chafing on my groin area. I don’t know whether it was something I wore. Does anyone else have such issues?

Cycling shorts usually for me, athough for local trips I'll just wear whatever I happen to be wearing. For anything over a few miles I'll put the shorts on though.
