Well after bonking due to lack of fuel on a lone ride a month or so back I decided to to eat proper on the bike. I tried maltloaf (banana) in cling film which was interesting, the maltloaf was fine just getting at the bugger whilst group riding. I am aiming to eat after 60 minutes then 30-40 minutes on the bike to keep the smashfest (not) going.

What do you guys eat on the road, what is high cal and easy to unwrap and eat? I did think of banana but its tough going peeling one in a group.

Not sure what is hard about peeling a banana or some cling wrapped malt loaf in a group, use your teeth

It was a sight I tell thee... I had to pop it in my Gilet on dodgy parts of the road and all sorts, it doesnt help that I breath through my mouth so cycling with a mouth full is suffocating lol.

I was thinking of popping maltloaf or flapjack in a freezer bag

Which is exactly what I do. Can't be arsed to make my own so I buy those packs of bite-size flapjack and decant them into a bag for a longer ride
They're about 7p per "bite" and each bite has about 70 cals so 10 in a pocket is enough for me

Bonking is an essential learning point to recognise the point where your body gives up. Strange thing is on the next ride, you can get to the same point, without much difference in food intake and you just sail past without blowing up and you get home with those emergency rations still in your pockets.

Must admit though, there have been many occasions when I've called in at a garage or corner shop and treated myself to a Mars Bar!

Danger of serious sugar crisis there unless you are 30 mins from home!

I now always put a gel or two and a muesli or energy bar in my pocket. Very rarely use them, but nice to have them there.

I eat before i go out but then nothing for at least two hours.I just don't need it for that length of time. For four hour ride i usually take a flapjack. That does it for me.

I tried my first ever gel this weekend and to be honest i ain`t that keen.It was like eating lemon flavoured snot.

As an advertising tag line, it may need some work

Nothing under two hours but for over two hours i usually take an energy bar or two. Just completed Coast and Castles at the weekend (200 miles in two and a half days) and ate two energy bars and two bananas each day, as well as stopping for either bacon sandwich and tea or scone and coffee each day. Now I've ran out of energy bars (powerbars) I'm wondering if they really are any better than other more natural foods ...

I stop about every 10 to 15 miles and eat ,usually take flapjack but will be taking a half sandwich with peanut butter on from now on.
Stops only last about 5 minutes if that.
