Too tired to do a massive write up so here is a summary.

Planned to 120 mile ride today including Gospel pass climb, following the route of the Audax.

Bailed at Abergavenny. Had a 2,000 mile old Shimano 105 front mech snap clean on me about 15 miles away from Hay-on-wye so couldn't change down to small ring. In Hay-on-wye, manually got the chain onto the bottom ring, but by now I was already knackered. Did the Gospel Pass, discovered my maximum heart rate was 5 bpm more than I thought, completely under-estimated the climb. Also my Lidl saddle bag snapped completely, so further mental demoralisation.

Couldn't hack having to give another 35 miles of spinning on the bottom cog, so rang the wife who kindly picked me up earlier.

At the moment, I am really annoyed with Wiggle, I had always had issue with this front mech on my Focus Cayo, could never get it setup right, took it to the LBS about 500 miles ago, turned out it was aligned too low and was rubbing on the big chainring slightly which bent it, so they raised it and bent it back, so obviously it had weakened the mech and today it just spontaneously exploded on me. Bike is 2 years old so can't be bothered to bring up Sale of Goods act, but have decided I am not going to buy from Wiggle again. I mean, in the list of mechanical failure likeliness, the front mech snapping is pretty low on my list.

Anyway, going to source an Ultegra one which I see you can get on CRC for £25, just need to know what size I need? They have 28.6mm/31.9mm, 34.9mm and a braze on. Basically my bike is a 105 running a compact double on the front 34/50 and a 27/12 on the back.

Pic of my snapped 105 mech...

It's a subtle and fraught business dealing with both LBS and Wiggle (or other online retailers).

I buy from both, as do most riders.

I am sensitive/sad enough to try not to go to my LBS with stuff I've bought elsewhere...

I've also asked my (excellent) LBS to sort out a problem with an online purchase. He did a brilliant job.

But... once I'd done that I was aware that any issue I had with the online vendor was now history.

I go to Wiggle/Evans et al for price.

I go to my LBS for outstanding service and for stuff I need to try on.

He is good and will match Wiggle prices where he can or get close where he can't.

If you embrace the dark side and buy online, you may one day live with the consequences.

On the plus side, you were riding in a most beautiful part of the world and you were collected by an ever-loving spouse... so it wasn't all bad.

Yup - looks like a braze-on mount , except it's bolted on, not brazed-on, not come across that before.

I've had a correctly fitted & aligned Tiagra rear mech explode on me (just sheared right across the main casting) so it could have been a duff part too.
