Hi!
Been commuting now for 2months and im loving it.
I will be upgrading my mountain bike to a hybrid as soon as i can persuade the wife i need to, but at the moment i have size 26x1.95 tyres and im wondering how thin i can go with a new set of slicks??

The commute consists of mainly a cycle/bridal way (made of fine gravel but quite hard) You know, the type that used to be a railway track?

Thanks in advance guys and girls

I'm sure I will be corrected if I am wrong but I think 1.5 would be about the limit.

I agree. 1.5 inch tyres are the best you can get on most MTB wheels.

The best tyres for the topic starters needs
on his new bike are 700 x 28. They'll be much better than any slick MTB tyre.

1.25 or 1.3 will be slightly faster than a 1.5 but slightly less comfortable. That's the trade off.

I slowly decreased the dimensions of my GF's tyres over the years until I got to 26 x 1" and she complained so I put the 1.3s back on. She rides much the same terrain as you describe. Continental Supersonics, guaranteed puncture proof and they come with a free tube.

out of interest, if I changed from 26x1.95 to 2x1.25/1.3, what kind of speed increase on roads would I get? (sorry for semi hijacking thread).

The narrower the tyre, the less rubber on the road, so they require more pressure to support the weight, so are harder, and less flexible over small bumps, therefore hurt your ass more :-)
