I am new to road cycling but am not into Lycra. Can anyone suggest another non Lycra type of short for road cycling but not a Mountain Bike style.

Looking forward to any advice

Cheers

Whatever shorts that you are comfy riding in, they dont need to be cycle specific unless your doing some major milage where confort is an issue. To my knowledge, all road specific shorts will be lycra (or tight), makes sense for aerodynamics, why ride an aerodynamic bike then slow it down with baggy clothes causing drag.

I pootle about wearing anything from camo shorts to denim shorts, no issues whatsoever(never done anything really long distance yet). No cycle specific clothing.

You could always buy padded undershorts and wear them under whatever shorts you like to wear for comfort without feeling self concious wearing lycra if it bothers you.

I'm not overly impressed with the padded boxers, nothing to stop you wearing padded lycra shorts instead of boxers and then any old shorts over the top.

errr... I must be really weird:blush:

I wear lycra on the MTB, comfy when wet does not get caught by branches etc and baggies on the road (NB day to day riding and touring not racing) as pockets are a good thing.

So, wear whatever you are happy and comfy wearing, the main thing is to get out and ride:biggrin:

By eck it must be warm where you are then if you can wear just shorts already :becool:

What's the craic with all these long tights; I thought cyclists were made of sterner stuff:biggrin: On a spin through the Kentish countryside this morning I passed about 10 other cyclists and noted that I was the only one wearing shorts. I thought it was positively spring like today:becool: and, in any case, find a bit of cold on the legs gets them spinning faster to warm up.

On a serious note, I tried a few pairs when shopping around and found lycra to be the most comfortable for me. Agree with MacB on the padded underwear and, as he says, if you don't want the lycra look, just wear a pair of normal shorts over the top (when cycling to the station en route to work, I just pop a pair of normal shorts over the top so i don't frighten the other commuters when sitting on the train:blush:).
