Hi,

I pick up my bike tonight and ive been told it has SPD pedals, So, not knowing a thing about these - what shoes do you recommend ?

I dont want to spend a fortune - cheaper the better to start with.

oh btw it a road bike if that makes any difference ?

Ta,

Dave

Wait until you see the pedals before you spend on shoes.
SPD .. they might mean SPD SL and they are different!
I assume you are not riding it back 'cos it can be tricky in ordinary shoes.

Cheaper is also definitely not better btw.....

Aha cheers for that - shall wait till i have the bike then.

Cheaper is certainly better, when you have never tried them before and may well not get on with them. If i get on with them an upgrade is only a computer click away ( so too speak)

There is no argument in my book for not riding in cycling shoes and whatever flavour of pedal.. it's like turning up for football practice in ballet shoes.. ( oh some do .. aha .. )

In fact on a road bike, I would go so far as saying it is an essential piece of kit and one of greater leaps in cycling technology as much as sti shifters...

I agree with Spartacus - even for casual riding these make a big difference

Specialized Taho is a great all round shoe which looks (very roughly) like a normal trainer but has a nice stiff sole. I have 2 pairs of those and they last years. I also have a pair of Specialized MTB sport which are also very good, but do look a bit more "cycling". The MTB part in the name means very little as they are identical to the equivalent road model except for additional tread around the cleat area meaning you can walk in them

+1 for the Spech MTB Sport shoe.

I found these a lot lighter than the Taho's and they are really really comfy to wear.
As Jay said they do look more 'cyclist' but I think they look a lot better than the Taho's as well, in my opinon.

I too was a bit unsure before making the change to clipless, but once you've tired it you deff won't look back. I wear mine on my commutes and weekend rides they are brilliant and well worth the money

Don't spend a fortune what ever you do.If you get into cycling you are going to want spd-sl or Look Keo pedals pretty soon as they transmit the power more effectively although they are not great for walking in.

If you are just cycling for leisure you cant go wrong with the shoes they do on special offers at Lidl or Aldi. You will have to buy the cleats seperately (dont cost much).

And until you get used to clipping in and out I would recommend loosening the tension, so you dont get stuck and end up falling off

Thanks for the advice peeps - really appreciated.

Well just got back with my new bike and the pedals that are on it are Shimano SPD SL's apparently

So err, What budgety shoes do you reccommend ?

Thanks,

dave

I've never seen anything but good reviews for these Wiggle own brand shoes, and they will fit your pedals. I've been trying to save up for some for ages. A touch under 50 Alans, which makes them budgety in my book. Or at least I would say that's the low end for proper road shoes so far as I've seen.

Though I'm no authority, I'm like you just looking to buy my first pair so I'm sure others can come up with better ideas.

Also Parkers have got Shimano RO62 and RO76 shoes both 20 quid off at the moment, if anyone knows anything about those I'd be glad to hear.
