Earlier this year I bought a road bike and have started training for LEJOG next September. I would like some views / advise on the right type of saddle. I appreciate there are so many different saddles and I will get so many different views, but I haven't got a clue at the moment.

Brooks are a love 'em or hate 'em saddle. Many cyclists swear by them, but just as many swear at them! The only way to find out which category you fall into is to try one.

I'll second the Charge 'tho - I've recently started using one as a new bike came fitted with it and I thought I'd give it a go before changing it for a Brooks. I'm impressed with it so far and will be leaving it on for the foreseeable future.

As you likely already know there is no saddle that fits everyone as we are all different despite looking the same. I upgraded the stock saddle on my cube out of vanity to a fizik and it was just not for me. Back to the stock saddle and we get on just fine now
Basically give whatever you have a go and if you can't get on with it have a look at the saddle library on here? Sooner or later you will find your match but don't give up too quickly with each saddle you try as they do need some caressing before they feel right. A bit like new shoes...

I appreciate that no saddle fits all, but I really am a novice to the different parts at the moment and I will look into different saddles, but it's always good to get peoples opinions from their experiences. I really do appreciate all the posts and comments. Thanks

I would say that probably far more people love Brooks saddles than hate them.

I had a Charge Spoon saddle and it was fine up to 20 miles but any further and it was terribly uncomfortable.

Saddles are a very personal choice and even then saddle set up is critical too.

I will second this. I have ended up with 2 Charge Spoons and I have exactly the same problem. Mine are okay up to about 30 miles, after lots of tinkering with settings, but not much further.

I've just about had enough of them now and I'm looking for alternatives.

I have a spoon on my mtb and it is ok....but creaks a lot which is bloody irritating. All my other bikes have Brooks B17 standard saddles (standard is wider than the racing version) I love the Brooks saddles and happily will sit for a 100 plus on a day. I wear a pair of cheap padded pants or tights...and have never needed creams or had saddle sores.....I am told that Spa Cycles of Harrogate do a very good range of leather saddles that are very competitively priced when compared with the Brooks range and of similar quality.....so worth exploring. Mind you, for ultimate bum comfort (due to shoulder issues) I now ride a recumbent bicycle with a big comfy seat.......

SDG Bel Air is also worth looking at. Not cheapest around, but i certainly find mine comfy

FWIW I love the Brooks B17, (I've had two but don't own one presently), but I could never get comfortable on a Charge Spoon, go figure.

You might want to have a look at the Cycle Chat Saddle Library, it may save you ££££'s on trial and error failures in the long run.

Myself, and many others have haemorrhaged £££££££'s on saddles, often based on the recommendation of others, only to find the new saddle is a right royal pain in the @rse!

One thing I would recommend is a saddle fitting at a Specialized dealer.

Their BG system is very good IMO, and I'm using one of their saddles on my best bike right now, and to great effect I might add

I have a Spoon. For me it is just too wide so not bad but not as comfortable as I would like on longer rides. I just bought a secondhand Fizik Arione as an alternative cheap try, and first impressions are very good.
