Will shortly be getting a new winter road bike and i'll have mounts plus clearance for mudguards - will be running 25c or 28c tyres. What would you recommend?

Not too bothered about weight just want something that wont rattle and is easy to fit!

+1 for the chromoplastics. The stays nearly always need trimmed though and they are quite tough so decent bolt cutters or hacksaw is usually required.

I've been put off a bit by them as quite a few of the reviews say they are difficult to fit. Suppose i could just get the bikeshop to do it instead

I've had chromoplastics on a couple of bikes including here. If I can fit them anyone can but I did have to get my LBS to cut the stays cos I didn't have the right tool.
Gilles Berthoud and the prettily hammered velo orange guards are stainless steel options but I don't have experience.

Just fitted some SKS mudguards based on bike shop recommendation. It took me a couple of hours of fiddling, but I was being very fussy & cleaned the nooks & crannies at the same time. Look good, worked first time. Maybe a couple of minor adjustments to do as I go along.
