As I'm now starting to venture a little further away from home, and at times when my significant other isn't always available for a rescue call  I think I ought to get a small pump that I can carry. There seems to be a bewildering choice - can anyone make some recommendations? My tyres need 60 to 80 psi.

I'm looking for something that's easy to carry/mount on my bike - a trek 7.2 FX. Can I mount / fix a pump to the bike, or how are they normally carried? I don't have a saddle pack or similar.

I do have a track pump for everyday use at home, so the 'on bike' pump would be for use when the p* demon visits.

Thanks

I have a Beto 2 Way Mini Pump with Gauge which is small, cheap, can get to 100psi, and has a gauge. It comes with a mounting sytem that fixes to the frame if you have the holes. I think the 7.2 only has 1 set so maybe you have drinks holder already using them?

You can fix with other fixings though, there are some neat little elastic straps for sale for just this type of situation or, if you're recycler/reuser like me, a bit of old innertunbe and cable ties will do the job adequately

I've got the Topeak Pocket Rocket-it's small, light, well constructed, fits easily to the frame (can piggyback onto mounts used for a bottle cage) and I used it in anger yesterday easily getting sufficient pressure in my road tyres in just a couple of minutes. Great piece of kit

Thanks all - I've taken a look at all your suggestions and it looks like it's the topeak mini morph for me. I'm hoping it's an accessory I won't have to use for a while ;)

Thanks again - yes I pondered the idea of going co2, but the pessimist in me thinks 'll always be just one cartridge short of a successful repair... : (

Llama - that looks a good option, I like the fact the foot stirrup is a metal rather than plastic, and that it's got a gauge.

I recently got a Spesh Air Tool Road in the EBC sale and I've been pleasantly surprised. It doesn't have a hose like the fancier pumps but it gets a road tyre up to pressure just fine and looks pleasingly minimalist (and metallic) clipped on next to my bottle cage. Even at non sale prices it's under a tenner and is a million times better than a mini pump - they're awful for road tyres.
