Hello everyone, this is one for the merckx enthusiast (or equally bike world stephen fry's out there). Have been looking at obtaining an 'older' style racer and have come across this but have no idea of the model and therefore it's worth. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

I've attached a picture of it and the seller has listed the stats as:

- 22½” /57cm maroon gents racing frame
- 10 Sachs Huret derallieur gears with dual downtube changers
- Shimano Tourey centre pull racing brakes
- Racing ‘drop’ style handlebars with hard wearing bar covering
- Racing saddle
- Bar top and front operated brake levers
- 27” racing wheels
- ‘Rattrap’ reflective racing pedals

Thanks in advance,

It's worth next to nothing, I'm afraid. Eddy Merckx branded bikes were made in Britain during the seventies under licence (by Falcon I think) and all or most were low end stuff just cashing in on the name.

The one in your picture would have been made of gas-pipe tubing going by the all steel components fitted to it. It's got clearance for mudguards if you wanted a cheap commuter, but that's about it.

I had a bike similar to that (smaller size, in orange, Mafac brakes, Campag gears). It was, as Smokin Joe says, made by Falcon and then equipped with a couple of Merckx transfers. The frame wasn't too bad; it was 531 but was a bit flexy.

As for worth, dunno but I guess a lot more if people think it's the real thing rather than a relabelled Falcon.

There's a Falcon going on Flea Bay at the moment - my guess would be £80 tops just for the name, without that it's a £50' er.

The serious value Eddy Merckx had imprinted Merckx logos on the lugs, tend to be made from Columbus tubing and had much higher level components. As SJ says this one of is typical of the mass manufactured bikes made in the seventies and early eighties. It is unlikely to be made from a recognised tubing the frame geometry will be fine though. Value who knows but probably £40ish because of the name. You would be better trying to look for a bike with either Reynolds 501 or 531 tubing which is a good indicator that the bike is of a reasonable quality. Hope that helps

Mate at work had one also. You can tell it's not a top quality frame by looking at the rear drop outs - they are cheap. Also has a light bracket on the forks.

its worth what ever people will give you for it , but why sell it if you use it and enjoy it for what it is a nice bike that is useable
