What sort of lubricating oil do you use for chains/sprockets?

Can I use 10W40 engine oil which I use in my car?

Yes, nothing wrong with using car engine oil. Though chain oil will claim to reduce the 'fling' of oil on the chain (how much is thrown off) and and also attract less dirt to the chain. Engine oil would have no need to be particularly optimised for these 2 properties, but it will certainly effectively lubricate your chain.

Personally, I use Finish Line Pro Road, it looks like melted butter when applying it and I'm sure it has helped to silence the drivetrain. No problems in wiping the chain clean in my post ride maintenance, either.

Dave.

Oil chain only, and only the rollers (the middle) - Finish Line Dry here as well, although needs re-applying after a wet ride......... Wipe of excess from the outer parts of the chain once dry...

Another user of Finish Line here. I've run out of the dry and only have Wet until I get back to Hong Kong (can't find it here in Vietnam). The wet is good in the wet but is a bit messy if you use it in dry dusty conditions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No! Don't do it! Get some of this - the fiver includes p&p, and it'll be the best fiver you ever spent on your bike.
