Hi all , I'm shortly going to take my family (wife & two young kids) to centre parks Sherwood & will be taking our bikes with child seats ! I've heard about theft of bikes from these parks but I've never left my bike unattended so never needed a lock , found out today it's a minefield ! Any tips ? I should add the bikes are both decent but under £1k in value & im not rich so looking for a good all round lock that won't burst the bank ! Thanks in advance ....,,

I've left a bike in London with these, can secure both wheels or the kid seat etc. Quite small though which is more secure in terms of jacking open, but may restrict you as to where you can park

There are better d locks but they are very heavy and will cost £70+ each

Eg http://www.evanscycles.com/products/kryptonite/new-york-fahgettaboudit-mini-lock-ec018761 (also v small)

No lock is completely thief proof if someone has the right tools and determination

Make sure the bikes are insured away from home and any lock you choose meets the requirements of the cover

If all you're doing is pootling around the site you could always consider hiring bikes once you get there. Then you don't need to worry about it.

Don't really like anything to do with cable locks anymore.Someone almost nicked my bike one night at a railway station and that was in 1985.The tools to do this sort of thing now are much better.

EDIT: Not true.I do actually lock my helmet up with a cable lock.

The bike parks and villa parking are all ones which your wheel goes in so you will need a cable to secure the front wheel and frame. You are discouraged from parking up against anything more substantial as it blocks the walkways.

I would recommend a trip up to Sherwood pines, it is about 20 mins ride and has a cracking bike shop and trails for beginners to experts.

One thing to point out is there is lots of pollen about so take muc off to wipe the bikes down.

Thanks but I prefer using my own gear & it's expensive to hire for the week when I already have bike carrier etc ....... Although I don't have to worry about theft

No guarantees though, so make sure you are insured (unless you can afford to replace the bikes out of pocket with no worries). Those should be a reasonable deterrent especially is there are better unsecured bikes around

Home insurance is normally the cheapest way. That lock is either bronze or silver level so check whether that is sufficient for the insurer

Choice of lock may be dictated by what your bike insurance policy says too
