Hi all, some advice please from the more experienced mechanics out there.....

I have recently got a new bike with Shimano Ultegra 6700 group set. Either side of the down tube there are gnarled adjusters which have the front and rear mech cables running through them. As in this picture....

I think these are for adjusting the gear cable tension, but am not sure. I have used the one running to the rear mech today to fine tune the shifting on the rear cassette which was a little off. It seems to have worked and it now shifts smoothly and precisely. Was that the right thing to do?

Each of these cable adjusters has a kind of sprung/split pin in it (see second attachment). What does this do? Does it just hold the adjuster in the right position once adjustments have been made? And should it be taken out when making adjustments or left in permanently? Seems a bit small, and being sprung, it is likely to make a break for freedom if removed.

Many thanks.

It's a down tube barrel adjuster. Does the same job as the rear mech one but you can reach it whilst riding the bike so you can adjust on the move for the rear and for the front just crispens the change if the limit screws are set right.

Not sure about the spring clip, can't see anything similiar on mine.
