What is the weight difference between fixed forks and suspension forks

That depends on the budget and proposed use, and material used. Some sus forks weigh less than non sus, some don't. I don't think theres a rule of thumb for this.

I sometimes think I should swap the front sus of my MTB to a straight fork. Is this possible, should I. What's the cost?

I'll go out on a limb and say for a price point of around £200 (ie the entry point for good front suspension), sprung forks will be around the 2 kg mark, an equivalent size and shape carbon fork around 800g. So roughly 40% of the weight.

I have often fantasised about putting carbon forks on my mtb. I saw a Boardman hardtail in Halfords the other week, which had a carbon fork. It looked pretty hot!
