Hi,

I'm just in the process of updating my old road bike and next on the list is the headset. Took it apart to give it a good old clean and grease the components up but discovered the parts were all rusty and falling apart, my own fault I know I should have paid it more regular attention. Just wondering if anyone knows what headset I should be looking at to replace the old one? Have been browsing the net for research but still unsure.

Thanks!

You only need to replace the bearings and retaining/spacing ring, dead common, any bike shop should stock em for a tenner or so.^_^
EDIT just take the rusty one in with you

Specialized did some weird and wonderful things to their headsets in the mid 2000's.

I think you have what is called a Mindset (please google and confirm).

The frame is set up to take integrated headsets where the sealed bearings just drop in but in their wisdom Specialized then introduced cups top and bottom (as in a semi-integrated headset ) which were pressed in. I think these took caged bearings.

So you now have a choice.

1. Replace the bearings if poss.

2. Replace the headset by knocking out the old cups and installing new ones

3. Simply knock out the old cups and introduce an integrated headset - you may need to change the crown race.
