Some background info first:
I decided to look at replacing my chain on my road bike before it became worn so bought a replacement.
Now i'm not the most mechanically minded so bear that in mind. I took my old chain off with a splitter then measured out the new one and completely ballsed up the length. I ended up taking too many links out (told you i am mechanically suspect ^_^) and chucking out the chain. So! I put a quick link on the new one and refitted. Now i haven't a clue about what way round (if any) it should go and the first attempt it didn't feel right. Sort of jittery as i rotated the chain if that makes sense. Anyway...i swopped the rotation of the chain and now it runs like silk when spinning it with the bike on the stand.
Right, now the problem!
During a sportive ride yesterday i could hear a noise that's new to me coming from the bike but only when the cranks are under load. When riding on the flat sort of coasting along its fine but whenever i push hard i get the noise again. It's hard to describe the actual noise i am hearing but its kind of a grinding catching one if that makes any sense. I cant feel anything through the peddles so its not too pronounced.
Could this be anything to do with my inabilty mechanically or maybe something more serious like the bottom bracket?
Also, is there a right way to refit a chain just to rule that out?
Thanks in advance for any replies folks

I suspect everythings ok Billy...does the sound have a mechanical 'whirring' note. Like a low level vibration sound perhaps ?
Several times ive changed chains but not the cassette, i get that whirring sound when i press along, nothing while freewheeling, nothing while pedalling steadily, only when i press hard. Its the new chain mis-meshing temporarily with the old cassette i think, it beds in after a few rides and disappears every time.

That's very interesting gbb. The reason why i find it interesting is i put my old chain back on after butchering the new one. That suggests to me that i may have put it back on in a different orientation as it was very quiet prior to my inept tinkering. I'll swop it around when i get chance as i'm back working for the next 3 days.
Cheers

when a chain wears, the other parts of the drive train i.e. sprocckets comprising the cassette and chainrings also wear.

depending on how worn the chain was, the cassette my be too worn for a new chain so can make noises and worst case chain jumps.

I understand that i think. That was the reason for me trying another chain in the first place. I had no wear hardly on my chain or cassette. So i wanted a new chain to keep it like that, particularly the cassette. But i made a mistake taking too many links out of the new chain so put the old one back on. Since then its been noisy, so i am thinking i have got it back on in a different orientation or the quick link i added to it is rubbing.

Hi
This sounds similar to a problem I had when I changed my chain recently... I'd describe it as a rubbing / clicking noise.

After a trawl of the interwebs and a chat with some knowlegable chaps, I realised that I'd routed the chain incorrectly...on the wrong side of one of the guides, hopefully these pictures will help to explain...

(Since I had a powerlink - I was able to fix it for the commute back home)

Hope that helps.
(or someone else if it not applicaple to you  )

Quick update:
After rotating the original chain i got it to run silently with no odd noises. I marked the chain and took it off. Replaced it with a new one and hey presto its silent too
So, had a very quick ride to prove to myself it was ok under load unlike my original issues. Fortunately its as quiet as a church mouse. I've kept the original chain as an emergency spare. Still no wiser as to why it was such an issue which is a small worry for my education (cycling!) gap.
Anyway, thanks for the help all
