Load cycle routes on it to follow - include European maps
not fussed about it speaking to me (e.g. turn left in 50 meters) I'm sure I can follow the route without that
long lasting battery
that would just about cover what I want it for

Etrex 20. Uses AA batteries so you can use rechargeable ones most of the time but for proper rides you can just stop at a shop and buy some disposable ones.

I'm not sure if any cycling GPS talks to you, the Etrex 20 will beep at you and flash the next instruction on the screen though.

Gamin 800/810 or the touring. My 800 doesn't speak but goes bonkers if you take a wrong turn off a pre loaded course

Or use your smart phone with an additional battery pack if budget tight
