what gears are best on giant sedona?

Im thinking of upgrading my gears on giant sedona but have a limited budget. Ive got sram shifters with sis rear derailer. I dont know what the front one is tho. Im getting confused as to whether the sram shifters go with my gears. What set is best for smooth gear change? I dont like twist grips anyway so I want rid of them. Its a 7(21)speed bike and thats how I want it to stay so does that rule out deore? Is there much difference between acera and alivio? I need the full details of what shifters I need with what derailers etc please as I am new to all this. Any advice off you kinetic would be appreciated.

Acera is lower end than Alivio (by one level) meaning the Alvio will shift smoother than Acera. Yet if you want to upgrade to Alivio, you will have to change to 8 speed, by changing the front and rear derailleurs and cassette. You can upgrade for less money by changing the 7 speed derailleurs with the Acera and still have a decent upgrade. Some will say that lower end stuff is crap, but I've seen and experienced that lower end Shimano components last longer than higher end stuff.

Deore is 9 speed, meaning you'd have to change to a 9 speed crankset, cassette, deralleurs and shifters - Expensive upgrade.

So, I'd just get Acera derailleurs and Altus trigger shifters as an upgrade.

I'm doing some fiddling with my old faithful 21 speed Ridgeback hybrid - low end stuff but has served me very well since 1997.

Rear mech has maybe gone a bit funny so I'm planning to switch to this: - it seems that I can run it with 7 speed and then "upgrade" the complete system to 8 later if I need.

I am inclined to think kinetic is right - lower end stuff can be tougher - I get the feeling that there's a lot of **sh*t talked about bike componentry - I have no desire to show off jewellery on club runs and I'm not a racer looking for lightning gear changes.
