Considering going SPD on my new bike in the near future.

I currently have some of these Shimano SPD / Flat pedals but never used the SPD side, not sure if i'd stick with them or go for something like this I have a few problems with my right knee so i think i need a pedal that has a bit of 'float' if that helps?

If i buy shoes like this what else do i need?

Are these compatible?

Sorry for all the links but a bit confused by all this cleat / shoe business!!

If you buy the M520 pedals ( I use them and can recommend) then you should get the SPD cleats with the pedals which will also fit the shoes you linked to, so no need to purchase separately. If you have not clipped in before make sure you set the clip in tension at its lowest and practise clipping in and out!

The SPD cleats you linked to should fit both the shoes and your existing pedals if you decide to go that way.

You should grease the bolts that attach the cleats to the shoes but I cannot for the life of me think of the name of the specific grease.

You will also need an allen key that fits the screws/bolts

If you are fitting the pedals yourself you need a pedal wrench although you can bodge with an adjustable ordinary wrench (carefully) Watch the way they twist in as you go one way for the left and the other for right. Again its fri eve and I've got a mental block and can't remember which ways which but once you start the job its fairly easy and you quite quickly get the idea. removing the old pedals and menatally noting which way they screw off helps!

Hope this helps

Hi Mike
I have done it the other way round to you started with the 520's and have changed to the 324's because i like to ride on the flats when out with the wife. You will want the SM-SH51 or SM-SH56 cleats for both pedals you have posted links to

Thanks for the answers.

I may stick with my current pedals and see how I get on with them for now. Just a bit concerened they will always be the wrong way up!!

Yep I do have a pedal wrench too!

The pedals you have are really good in my opinion. I used to have them on my DF bike and then moved them to my trike and now they are on my Bacchetta Giro.

They are comfortable all day and you can also use them without being clipped on.

I would try them for a while and see how you feel.
