My Topeak Aero Wedge is now in bits. Looking to get something new. I have a cross bike and do a mix of road/off road riding (Pentlands, etc).

Some of the rides I have planned for next year are in pretty remote places (off road) and I'd like something that has enough storage space for food and other items that can keep me going when I'm out for hours alone, as well as the usual inner tubes, tools, etc.

Not sure I fancy another wedge as it gets in the way of my laptop bag when I commute. Panniers bounce around too much when I'm off road.

I've seen a lot of gravel guys use handlebar bags. I saw a cheap one in Halfords by Ridge. My experience with Ridge gear hasn't been good - had a pannier that broke after a few months of light use, but I packed that heavy. This thing just has to carry the basics.

Another option was a big saddle bag, but again that will interfere with my laptop bag. Anyone know of any cheap and cheerful options I should look at?

For day use I have several Camelbaks of different sizes and capacities. Not everyone likes the load on their back, but I dont like the way a bar mounted load deadens steering response, or the way a rack mounted load hinders the machines attitude beneath me.

It's almost entirely a taste and preference thing - what suits me will have the next, perfectly rational, rider telling me I'm a fool. You may need to experiment and experience a few options before you're entirely happy.

Good luck.

I use Topeak wedges on all the normal bikes, or Topeak MTX rack bags on the commuter. The ICE recumbent trike uses a Topeak handlebar bag mounted on the back of the seat, the mounts and bag itself are excellent quality so that may be the way to go.
