Had major surgery 18 months ago (an oesophagectomy) resulting in reduced stomach size. i was a fair weather weekend biker before the op with rides between 20 and 50 miles. Am a bit concerned about tackling these distances now as i dont want to burn off the calories which i will struggle to replace after the ride. What type of foods can i eat during the ride that will give the most calories/energy?

When I'm going for a big ride, I take home-made flapjacks - made with mixed grains (not just oats), pumpkin seeds for protein, and made with honey instead of sugar. They are packed full of carbs and protein.

After the ride, perhaps you could go for a meal replacement drink, like complan, and then have a normal meal afterwards when the complan has worked its way through? Those drinks digest pretty fast.

Has the hospital lined you up with a appointment with the dietician ? After my illness I'd lost about 2 stone in a few weeks shakes were prescribed to me tbh they tasted rank though and I've no idea if they'd be right for you galaxybloke.

Good Luck!

I lost 12 pounds after the op (from a pre op weight of 9 stone) and was prescribed a thick oily drink called calogen but it played merry hell with my stomach. Might give complan a go as suggested by XmisterIS. Need to get out on the bike soon, roll on the good weather!

Bananas, flapjacks, salted nuts, jaff cakes and a glucose drink. Not all at the same time a but at least 2 or 3 of them on long rides.

Decent breakfast an hour or so before you set off too.

try eating a bowl of raw oats with milk. Because they arnt cooked they dont feel as heavy, so your able to eat alot more of it, but it'll keep you full for a long time. i used to do it because i had a lack of appetite the morning before a long cycle

If you want something with lots of calories for low amount of somach volume, surely energy gels are an option? You might need to try a few different brands to find one you like and suits your stomach. I'd also use energy drink rather than water in your bottle. You can make your own (drink and even gels) - a bit of googling should throw up a few ideas.
