Hello

I have mountain bike
http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/mountain-bikes/apollo-slant-mens-mountain-bike

I have not much experience with maintaining bikes so go easy on me

When i bough it first thing i upgraded was pedals i knew they wont last long, so i bough steel ones. They lasted longer until right pedal started to wobble. My first thought was that i did not tighten them strong enough or when I was tightening them i did not line pedal straight enough into crack arm.

So i removed my pedal, installed it again.Took it for a ride, 3 minutes later pedal starts wobbling so bad it felt like pedal will come off any second (it did happen when i was going to work, thank god I was not on the road). Next day i suspected i need new crank arm so i started googling around, and somehow can't remember how i found out that for the right side crank arm i need whole crank set. But there's is so many of them i don't know what size to buy for this bike.

I am wondering if anyone could post me a link of crank set or list of it that would fit my bike and any tools that are required. I know i will need crank removal tool.

Thanks in advance.

Hi
Is the pedal loose in the crank, or is the crank loose on the bottom bracket spindle?
(Confused by these terms? Have a look at the Park Tool website here and click on "Where is the problem")

Anyway, a bike at that price level is likely to have a "square taper" bottom bracket, so the "crankset" (more usually called a "chainset") needs to match. As it's got 18 gears and a six speed freewheel, you'll need three chain rings on the chainset, or a "triple". It's got 42/34/24 teeth, so you might want that again. See if there's a number stamped on the rear face of the crank. 170 or 175. That's the length of the crank in mm. So you're looking for a triple chainset with 42/34/24 teeth, square taper, 170 or 175mm long.

Having said all that, I see Halfords have a 42/32/22 triple with 175mm cranks for £18.99. That'll might do it and is a good price, although you might have to fiddle with the chain because of the smaller inner ring (22 teeth instead of 24), although the slack could get taken up by the rear mech.

On the other hand if it's the crank come loose on the bottom bracket spindle, you might sort it by doing the bolt up tightly.

How long ago did you buy it? If less than 12 months, take it back to Halfords and ask them for advice. Did you take it in for the first service? This should be free of charge, and would pick up on anything which was loose.
