Obviously an overly simplistic question, but I want to have a dedicated audax bike and I can't really afford what I want, don't want to commit to finance and so I have thought about buying everything gradually and then getting it built for me, or even attempt to do it myself.

So far I have thought about:
Frame and forks
Wheels
Groupset
Headset, stem and bars
Mudguards
Seat post
Saddle
Tyres, rim tape and innertubes.

Anything else?
Jon.

For an audax bike, perhaps a rack?

I dont know what comes under groupset as im a technical noob, but brakes are quite important  and bottom bracket, cranks, pedals, shifters?

Dunno if any of that helps

Unfortunately this might not be what you want to hear, but building a bike with new bits is the MOST expensive way to own a bike, followed by building it with used bits, which could cost roughly the same as buying a new complete bike, followed by buying a used bike (which is by far the cheapest way to own a bike). Indeed buying a used bike and breaking out the bits could be the cheapest way to get the bits.

Of course it takes time, some knowledge and skills to buy anything used, but it takes time and knowledge to build a bike with new bits too.

I'm not 100% sure if this remains true in the cycling world, but in computing if you plan to buy all your components over a period of time as you get the money, by the time you buy the last component you may find the first one is out of date, and there is something newer/cheaper/faster on the market!

I would recommend saving the money until you can afford to buy all of your parts or a whole bike in one purchase.
