Only recently got into cycling as i am about to touch 40 and it appears not to hurt my knees like other more impact activities! So i've done Manchester to Blackpool and am now training for the Manchester 100 miler after just buying a Boardman Hybrid but wondered what clothes it is worth investing in?

There does seem to be that much available at a wide range of prices it's tough to know what to get (sounds a similar quandry I had buying my bike!)

I have initially seen these bib shorts that seem like a good thing to go for and they are half price!! (although not that keen on them being bright red tbh) http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/productDetails.asp?productID=14943

Any advice of what and where to get stuff from would be greatly appreciated .

Them spesh shorts are very good value, but there is a slight risk in wearing red shorts..

Endura make very good value shorts and well worth the money. Fs260's are good, Mt500's are a harder wearing and very comfy

It wasn't just shorts I am after, i just like the idea of bib shorts in that they can't wrigle down like my cheapo ones keep doing. I am not really sure what I need in total for top and bottom half, there seems to be that many different stuff - base layers, general tops fitted and loose, gilets, jackets windproof or waterproof, under shorts, over under shorts, bib shorts, JUST shorts, trousers, tights, fingerless gloves, normal gloves, etc. etc.

The mind boggles !!!!!!

I prefer bib shorts too. I tend to buy my summer stuff in the winter and winter stuff in the summer, mainly because you get good end of season deals.

Sizes are generally the problem, i certainly wouldnt describe myself as a large bloke but i often have to get XL or XXL.

I would go for a couple of pairs of Bib shorts, couple of short sleeve tops a wind/showerproof top for starters.

As winter approaches Bib longs long sleeve tops maybe with a good base layer (I use helly hansen) and a water proof top.

The list to be honest could go on and on, but it depends how serious your going to be and of course on finances. As has already been said on here Aldi/Lidl kit is good value for money.

Just wondering (Felt making a thread would be a waste) is it better to get a long sleeve jersey over getting arm warmers if you already have a S/S jersey?

Padded cycling shorts are a must! I have a few pairs of cheap ones from Decathlon. They have served me well and won't break the bank at only 7 or 8 quid each! xx(

I'm always surprised at how many changes of cycling clothing I need. I go out twice a day and you really have to wash your stuff each time to avoid rashes/chafing. I tend to need about four pairs of shorts and four tops (plus relevant non-cotton underwear) to have enough for days when I don't do the washing. You have been warned!

Think I need to pick up some arm warmers, went out this morning and it was freezing, within about 2minutes of riding my arms were frozen... Cut my journey very short due to the cold.
