Hi, im pretty new to this form and road biking (last week ) and just wanted to know what was a good bike to start off with, i would idealy like a road bike but whats best

P.s If its a road bike i dont want the down tube shifters, and also a quick q how do the sti work on a road bike same as a mtb if so im sorted

Halfords or Decathlon a good place to start for entry level bikes, but you'll be looking at £300ish for road, £220-250ish for hybrid

For a starter Road bike and taking your budget into account I think you will be hard-pressed to find a better bargain. You are getting a bike from a reputable maker and from a reputable dealer. You will probably have to get it checked over by a local bike mechanic to make sure everything is set up right but that shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you get the right size (go to a Raleigh dealer and test one if possible)
16 gears should have enough spread for general commuting. Good value IMHO

The STi shifters are easy to get used to and involve 'tapping' one way or the other for shifting. They will be low-end Shimano but still good enough for commuting so the drivetrain should last if looked after.

So what your saying i should go for the Raleigh Sprint? ive had a few Releigh's before but theve all been Mtbs and one Burner?

Next thing i need to do is raise funds
