Hi, I've been looking to do some cycle events for (cancer) charities and so far I have only found Etape Caledonia... which is very far away from me as I live in Portsmouth!

Are there any other big events that are popular?

Any good websites for finding them out?

Thank you.

The London to Brighton for the BHF is one and there are a couple of others as well no doubt.

Remember as well that you can organise your own ride, notify the charity and off you go.

Thanks for the reply. I will check that BHF one out

Yeah I plan to do one with two friends but want to get a few events under my belt first.

There is a relatively popular one in Northwood/Rickmonsworth/Ruislip in West London every year for the Michael Sobell Hospice charity, it is usually every May so you just missed it. There are 3 routes, 12 miles, 23 miles & 35 miles. I think 150 people entered this year more than last year, which isn't bad as it is a local charity.

I'm surprised a Help For Heroes ride hasn't been organised (if it has let me know, I'll be there).

Sorry, I do not know where you live, but people come from all over the country to do a night ride from London, starting at midnight.
Look at FNRttC ( Friday Night Ride to the Coast) on Google and YouTube.. A mad pootle/ sweatfest (depending on ability) from central London to a coast somewhere. The next charity ride is on 3rd September, I believe.

Here is a link...

http://fnrttc.blogspot.com/

I wheezed and gasped the same route a couple of weeks ago through the night on a non-charity version brilliantly organised by the same people. The 3rd September ride raises money for Martlets hospice. A very friendly bunch of fellow riders will be there. It will be huge fun. You simply have to be there....

Edit: Sorry, Portsmouth is sooo close. Easy!

True.

Print out some sponsor forms and make sure there will be some Official Proof of you completing the ride. eg AUK.

Trouble is my works colleagues got fed up of handing over a quid each for every 200 km Rando I did.

After a short while ( Two ) they started moaning I wasn't doing anything special.

They have!! In 2008, 2009 & this year they ran a five day event through northern France/Normandy totalling around 350 miles each time (I did last year's ride). Each ride raised around £1 million for the charity!

This year, due to popular demand they are running another ride (in September) to Arnhem (again, around 350 miles over 5 days) - I'll be there!

I think they are still accepting registrations/applications but you need to raise just over £2k in sponsorship (half pays for the trip, the rest goes to H4H).

If you're in Portsmouth, the obvious one is the IoW Randonee (http://www.cycleisland.co.uk/). It's normally the May bank holiday weekend.

I'm dragging the family along to it next year.

There are a fair few here; http://www.cyclosport.org/events.aspx

Also, have a look on the big charity websites (British Legion, BHF, H4H etc.)

Was just about to mention cyclosport myself. Very good website with lots (and lots) of UK (and international) based cyclosportifs listed, meny of them for charity.

The other good site is http://www.bikeevents.com/ who put on a number of very well organised charity rides each year.

Fantastic ride, did it last year. It's now firmly on my annual events calendar along with the Dunwich Dynamo

Got to admit I'm biginning to get addicted to doing these cyclosportif rides. Roll on the Sept 3rd FNRttC to Brighton

That sounds good. It's just a bummer it's 350 miles. I'm fit but not "cycle fit." I ride a bike daily at work, but it's stop start all the time & I am only just getting on the bike to commute. If they did a 50 mile ride, I would be up for that though.

Maybe in a few years.

Or you could arrange and pay for a trip yourself, raise the same cash and give it all to charity.

A grand for 5 days? My two week tour this summer came in at less than a grand, and that was all hotels/B and B, and eating out in the evening, and included ferry fare, and lunchtime picnic kitty. I wonder how the organisers can spend a grand on each person over 5 days, even accounting for publicity, admin, insurance, back up and so on - bearing in mind they'll probably have economy of scale in terms of accommodation/food.

I suppose the charity is grateful for what they do get, and most people wouldn't get off their arses if it wasn't all sorted for them. But I'd be interested to know how much profit (if any) is made for the organisers.

Very true but it does include a lot of media coverage (e.g. front page of the red-tops, TV etc.), battlefield guides etc. The organisers probably do make a fair few bob from it all as well and a grand may be a high estimate (it may be lower than that - I can't honestly remember).
