What are my nipples for?

I can't ride at the moment so can't figure out the answer to this by riding, but I just spotted nipples on my Ultegra brifters and have no idea what they are for.

Although I may also have been motivated by the opportunity for a funny subject line...

They are for the Shimano flight deck computer.

It's wired underneath the bar tape. The nipples scroll through the computer screen.
The computer can also show you what gear you are in as in the pic above.

That is quite frankly remarkable! I had no idea!

Great idea in practice, but the flightdeck computer was never really well thought of, and IIRC it is/was very expensive for what it is/was.

I'm impressed but can't see much advantage compared to the Holux GPS I have. I try not to obsess too much about what gear I'm in, I'd rather judge it by how my legs feel.
