Oh what an F'ing day. I knew my bike needed new pads and that the rear wheel was seized (so I ordered pads and a cone spanner). Pads fitted fine as always. Rear wheel axle was hard to dismantle and I discovered that two Balll Bearings had been "eaten). Tried replacing and rebuilding but wheel was still very rough when spinning.
So I bought a new rear wheel. Swapped over cassette and disk and felt good. Then I noticed that the front wheel was catching on the brake pads. I tried realigning to no avail. Right I think I'll take off the wheel and check the axle and bearings. As the wheel comes off the rubber cone of the non disk side fell away from the hub only supported by the QR skewer. Odd I think. As I look closer realisation dawns. The axel had snapped. Too late and not enough cash to buy a new wheel I start to panic.
I then have an idea. I look at the rigid 26" bike at the back of the room and prey (or pray - your choice). Out comes the solid axle and low it fits the wheel. With a little bit of luck and spacers the wheel fitted onto my MTB bike. OK it now have vulgar nuts instead of a sexy QR but guess what; the brakes aren't catching any more! Once I can afford it I will buy a new wheel but am quite pleased with myself.
