Right ive now ordered my bike a Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc and need some accessories so wondering what I need. Bearing in mind I've spent over my budget on the bike I,m probably going to get the essentials and then buy other things in a few months time.

Im thinking now:

Pump, inner tube, helmet, gloves, shorts, lights, water bottle holder and bottle

Ive already picked mud guards which are being fitted and ive got the Muc Off cleaning pack a it was part of the deal.

So if anyone can recommend anything else or a a particular item listed above that they would reccomend then I would appreciate it.

Thanks Andy

Track pump - a Joe blow Max II

Don't forget tyre levers and patches if you want to repair tubes.

Lots of different makes out there for each one, I use Topeak mini pumps to take with me and I have a track pump to keep at home. I also like Continental tubes. Get some tyre levers and a puncture patch kit.

An alloy bottle cage is really cheap, see if you can get a bottle that has a cover for the top (protects it from cow crap if you're going into the wilds). I have found Specialized helmets fitted well for me (but might not for you, try a few on and you'll soon find out).

Get some Endura Humvee shorts, they are excellent and will last you for years! Gloves are another individual thing, I have some cheap mitts and some 661 full finger gloves that I am liking a lot.

Lights: do you need them to be seen with or to see by? The first will be cheap, the second very expensive.

A track pump is pretty much essential but you could get by with just a good portable one. A helmet is a good idea, you don't need to spend a fortune. Repair kit (Pound shop), tyre levers and a good lock. Kit you can buy as you go, I use chino type shorts and they are fine. A set of lights, even if they are cheap, if you are going to ride after dark. Shoes with a stiff sole if you can't afford cycle shoes.

As winter is approaching, a beeny hat to go under a helmet(if you wear one)to keep your head warm and some good winter gloves.

I have the same bike, albeit a 2012 one and not the sports version. Depends on what you are planning to use it for. I found the stock tyres far too puncture prone. I think they are LK fast track or something. I replaced them with Schwalbe Marathon Plus ATB tyres and I love them although they are much heavier.

My advice is to make sure you have a puncture repair kit, spare tubes, tyre levers. Make sure also that you know how to use them - practice at home and look at you tube videos. You don't want your first experience to be away from home not being confident about what you are doing.

If you are considering a lock, also consider a short cable so that you can secure both wheels.

Totally agree about practise. Should be able to put the tyre back on without levers - which I didn't appreciate until I had a lot of trouble with pinch flats

Good choice on the bike, by the way. I had to replace the brakes on my Hardrock because the cable disc brakes on the non sports version need constant fiddling and then the rear failed altogether. I am much happier with hydraulics.

My other piece of advice is to be careful cleaning it. If you are using a hose, use very gentle pressure. Especially around the hubs, bottom bracket and headset.

Get down to Aldi on Thursday next, their cycling gear sale starts. Serviceable gear at affordable prices. Be quick as the best stuff goes pretty soon

Last set of shirts I was buying after a month, but shirts and shorts and Jackets can go very quickly, our local one still had over shoes and other stuff from the last one early last week.

Computer - you'll kick yourself for not recording all your rides at some stage in the future.
A smart phone can do this to start with, but a basic computer will at least record your mileage and time, these are probably the most important ones when you start, log it in a spreadsheet ect... you can use gpsies for elevation if you remember your route, and it goes on if you can be bothered.

One of the multi-tools with a chain tool. Don't stint on this. Buy a good one and you will not have to replace it. Very good for tightening up loose fittings on the road. If it saves you once having to turn back, or walk home, it has earned its keep.

Id say a good accessory thats always worth having is a pair of glasses......standard sunnies would do fine......nothing worse than having a bug or piece of dirt fly into your eye. Ive got the endura sharks which come with three different coloured lenses.....darker ones for the day and clear for night or darker conditions and easy to swap round in a few seconds.
