Finally managed to get the Damned cranks off (bloody big adjustable spanners are great) and the bb has now been removed, looks a bit worse for wear compared to the new one! Bent 2 lovely shiny (cheap) 8mm Allen keys in the process. Didn't even need to use my breaker bar for the bb.

Should a square taper sealed bb be this crummy after under 2 years and 3000 miles? I was suprised it was rough after taking it out and seeing it stamped up as fsa.

Also would the wear marks on the chainring be an issue? I'm not sure if they're worn enough to warrant a change though

With the amount of a justment you have there is fine tuning and then fine tuning. Have you got a pic of the chain rings? If I am going to change a bb and your chain rings are the same age defo give them a change mate. At the end of the day you are the engine. You want the best possible linkage so splash out ;p

Chalk the difficulty up with removal as a lesson -make sure when you reassemble you clean the threads accordingly and thoroughly degrease -I also use a dabble of anti-seize to (hopefully) prevent any nasty seizing in future (oh, and make sure you use the right torque settings!). In the past I've come across bikes where I swear they put them together over torqued with dirt and grit as a glue.

A bb could be very crummy after 2 years and 3000 miles of use -depends a lot on the quality of the component, tolerances, and conditions you cycle in. Most bbs now are sealed bearing -but they aren't much good if the seal isn't working well.

I don't know if your chainrings are worn (need photo) but if they are, I'm with Cameron -you want the best possible. Sadly, if the chainrings are worn, chances are your chain is (you can measure it for wear) and probably your rear cassette. Usually it's not a good idea to mix and match worn parts with new ones on a drivechain -you'll just end up with a whole bunch of worn parts quickly.

I've just put a new chain and cassette on, and the small chain ring looks ok, just the big one that looks a bit suspect.

I'm changing the gear cables this weekend but don't have a torque wrench that goes over 25nm to check the bb and crank bolts. If I needed a new crankset would a fsa square taper 10speed work? currently running 8speed shimano 2300
