Hi guys,

Came back from work today in wet, windy and dangerous conditions. I was just wondering if there was any advice you could give a relative novice rider when riding around in such conditions on road.

Many thanks in advance!

I came a cropper on the penny with sidewinds once, my advice is to dismount!

Don't do this?

Slow down.
Anticipate side-winds.
Try to keep as much 'space' around you as possible.
Slightly lower tyre pressures for more road contact.
Avoid aero/semi-aero rims.
Don't wear loose flappy clothing with parachute-like tendencies.
Take the car/public transport/stay at home.

Anticipate, anticipate, anticipate. Look ahead, think ahead, try to avoid the need to do anything suddenly.

Is there any additional precautions I need to take riding around london?

Thanks for the advice so far!

Assume that everyone on the road around you is likely to do the stupidest thing at any given moment.

Approximately 1 in 10 of them will ... the only tricky bit being not knowing which one it is up front.

In London, or any city for that matter, keep an eye out for metal in the middle of the road - I don't mean loose bits of rubbish, I mean manhole cover-type plates. Bastard slippery when wet - you don't want to brake on one.

Keep at least a meter out from the kerb, be aware of large vehicles passing you. Read a copy of Cyclecraft, best advice for all beginners (and not beginners)

I had a large dumptruck miss me by a couple of inches yesterday, the mass of the beast and the noise was scary. Tosser driver.

A little off scope guys but I came across a flyover today but went around the round about instead as I felt it was safer.

What would you guys do?

corners , take it easy on corners and realise your brakes won't be as sharp, but stopping in the wet sharply, will result in a skid.

So i take it easy and enjoy it as a leusire ride day rather than my ride to work like my life depended on it !
