Bracket..... Hur Hur

Going on from my problems with a broken tab in the frame, I stripped the frame and got it sand blasted.

I did notice when removing the BB that it was wet. And I'm no wet weather rider. The seat post, chain stays and down tube all have holes that open the tubes to the bottom bracket. There is no where for any dampness to get out.

Any thoughts? I'm tempted to drill a 4-5mm hole on the bottom of the housing (away from the thread).

All you need to do is remove the screw holding the cable guide under the bottom bracket to drain the water out. Frame tubes do not suffer from internal damp, but when riding on wet roads spray from the back tyre gets in via the seatpost and the clamping slot on the rear of the tube. Seal round the tube/seatpost joint and over the slot with clear silicone.

Pretty much spot on. Wet gets in anywhere...a quick drain now and then, just to be sure. Drilling when you are not sure what you are doing is not a good idea, and wet would get in anyway unless it was sealed.

I was wondering. In cleaning the bottom bracket it seems sealed anyway. And drilling a drain hole could just increase the chance of water getting in. The Seatpost sealing idea is good.

As to storing the bike upside down, that's almost getting towards doing maintenance

A lot of frames are built with drain holes in the bottom bracket. My 653 tubeset frame has 3 narrow slots machined into it and they're not there to save weight.
