I've had carbon fibre (which I still have but don't ride much these days) for about 16 years but not without a few problems. One broken frame (replaced at my expense) and one cracked frame (fixed by me with a repair kit off the net) and it still rides well. Saying that I wouldn't have another one. I don't race any more and don't need one. I'm happy enough on steel.
Yes, youi have to be careful how you clamp them AIUI. But they are designed to withstand crashes and similar, and mine has had 3-4 significant crashes plus more that I would call falling over rather than proper crashes.
