Weird Rear Lights

I just saw one of the GB riders (looked like Lizzie Armistead) flying up the Cat and Fiddle climb into the fog towards Buxton. From the front it looked like the bike she was riding had some sort of outriggers attached sticking out a foot or so on either side, I thought it may have been some monitoring equipment but as I past her going in the other direction it became apparent that they were bright red strobe style rear lights at the end of each outrigger. Oh and just to add some controversey to this post she wasn't wearing a helmet.

Anyone seen these lights before?

Sort of. They were attached to the down tube though and were black fancy looking aero things (which is why I thought initially they might be some sort of monitoring equipment) rather than those 80's style pull out reflectors.

A bit like that but on both sides and attached to the down tube.

They look a bit dorky! Plus I guarantee around here they'd use the outboard light as target practice!!

You still can't beat a good wobble to make people give you a bit more space.

Her lights might have looked dorky but she was going up the climb faster than I have seen anyone.

She's up in the peaks so it could well be the gubbins transmitting her ride telemetry and needs the big outriggers as antenna

I think most of them are issued with Garmins, some of the U23 academy riders plot their rides on Strava from their Garmins. Hence KOM on the Cat being Simon Yates.

Quite a few riders out and it was about 30 ft visibility up top.
