What is the weight of a 9spd up to date Tiagra compact Groupset vs the SRAM Apex?

Just wondering what weight saving there will be.

No doubt the quality will be better (just watch the anti Shimano-bashers respond to that statement) and the cassette range of the 11-32 will be far better.

Thanks

SRAM Rival weighs in at around 2,300g and I would guess that Apex is the same, maybe a little heavier. I can't find a weight for the Tiagra groupset, but 105 weighs in at about 2,600g so I'd expect Tiagra to be a good couple of hundred grams heavier.

So I'd hazard a guess that you could save 500g with the SRAM groupset. SRAM groupsets are pretty light as well as working really well. I've recently bought a bike with SRAM Red and the difference between that and the Shimano 105 I've been using for the last couple of years is HUGE both in how nicely it works and in weight.

Thanks for the reply.

I've just got a new bike with Shimano whereas I've been using SRAM Rival on my road bike the rest of the year. The shimano just doesnt sit right - I don't like pulling the brake and finding that its heading inwards. Whilst I appreciate all changes take some getting used to the Tiagra set up just doesnt feel as smooth as the sram.

Whilst I wont do anything in the short term I'll potentially look to fit the apex next summer which will help not just with the weight, but also the 11-32 cassette vs the current 12-27 or something - going up very steep hills is getting nigh on impossible - I've not yet quit, buts its been close!!!! I'll keep going as it might help with the training/endurance, but any extra weight as I will do when touring and i'll be stuffed as it is.

Generally speaking, Campag and Sram are lighter than Shimano for groupsets at a similar level. A particularly comprehensive tabulation is here, albeit a couple of years out of date. Nevertheless, it might give you some idea how the new Apex compare - a review of Apex including weight for a particular gearing combination is here.

If you're going to change it, might it not be better to do it now? You'd probably get a better price for the Shimano stuff if it's hardly used, unfortunately it'd be best waiting til summer to sell, plus Apex might have come down by then, so it's probably best waiting full stop! There - I saved much faffing around changing a groupset until next year!

Have you checked Weight Weenies? It is a good starting point for carrying weight comparisons...

According to JE James the Apex is approx 2400g. Tiagra at approx 2800g. Even 105 is heavier at approx 2500g. You'd have to go Ultegra which is 2300g

So Apex hands down! Once converted to double-tap there's no going back.

Have you thought about going Rival? Looks like you can get this cheaper than Apex at the moment and of course lighter still

Thanks Tigger.

Rival is a great groupset. If it were more than £50 cheaper I'd go with that but get the long-cage & spend the £50 saving on an Apex cassette - I am really interested in the 32t big gear - the bike is going on a highlands tour next summer and with the added weight I reckon I'll need the 32t going up the hills!!

Whereabouts are you seeing the cheap Rival?

Hi, just a quick scan but Rival seemed cheapest here

http://www.jejamescy...ct-id49730.html

or for a little more these seem to have everything you want except the long cage in stock. Don't forget you can get the 11 or 12 - 32 in all SRAM sets except Red, so you might as well get a PG 1070 cassette
