Due to forthcoming wet weather and cold, I am thinking of wiping the exposed surfaces of my bike with WD-40 using a cloth thus creating a protective layer

Also thinking of spraying quantities of it into the drainage holes which feature at various parts of the frame in the hope that it coats the inside of the tubes and hence displace water with the ultimate aim of preventing corrosion from within.

Does WD-40 be a benefit/preservethe frame or not?

I wont be using it to lubricate moving parts.

get some acf 50 for this ,forms a protective coating and its easily removed (but not by water or anything)

I do this, except I use GT85 instead, as it leaves a protective PTFE coating (which is nice and shiny as well!).

I don't spray lots in the drainage holes, just a quick squirt whenever I'm cleaning the bike down, although I doubt spraying a lot in could do any harm, apart from making your bike a bit heavier if you go over the top!

Just be careful to keep these kind of sprays away from your brakes, chain, bottom bracket and wheel bearings. Also some say that WD40 will attack the rubber in fork seals, so if you have a suspension fork you may want to be careful of that.

I've always done that. No side effects.
I also use WD40 on the gear train after a thorough clean. Wipe off the excess and then lubricate as normal.

Will, your bike is built like a friggin tank... what you need WD40 for?
Or have you bought a decent bike recently? ;)

Mr Sheen gives a silicon coat and the bike's much easier to clean next time.
Yeah, but Charlie Sheen won't clean my bike for me.

One dollar will buy a lot of lubrication.

Ian, you lightweight, even tanks need love. i would'nt be the same without this bike and the bike would'nt be the same without me. It is a decent bike, its green, weighs 16.5kg and is timeless. Whats wrong with that?

Im gonna spread some GT85 on it in a minute cos its gonna rain this weekend.

Cheers
