Waterproofs

Just looking at my kit. I am useing my heavy duty fell jacket and cycle over trousers as the main water proofs. I know you can still get capes but going over Hartside rather puts me off them but can you still get leggins as I used to preffer them to full over trousers. Also I have seen some Karrimore cycle jackets for £20 reduced from £50 any comments on these.

I find all waterproof clothing makes me sweat like crazy. Unless you are riding 1-3 miles then don't bother with trousers. Jackets also make me sweat - even the £150 ones! However, they are useful in the winter to avoid hypothermia. In the summer I just get wet (again unless it's a short ride to work or similar)

I sweat a lot in waterproofs too (doesn't help that I have hyperhidrosis), but I find the best ones are the ones with one layer of material
and no mesh liner or any other type of liner. Nowhere near perfect for me though, as I also get too hot no matter what I'm wearing regardless of the weather (it can be literally snowing, and I will still be too hot), got an endocrinologist appointment on the 20th of this month so hopefully they can do something about both problems.

I dont mind getting wet on the way home from a short or even long ride in the summer but when you are on some thing like the End to End or even a three day jaunt and you must do X miles before reaching uncertain lodgings then it's a different story and thats why I posed the question "is it a cyling jacket or a multi purpose jacket and is it leggings or over trousers" and I do agree that neither are really welcome but in a freezing downpour what is the alternative? apart from a Taxi to your lodgings

I did LEJOG last September and hardly wore my jacket even though it rained almost everyday.

Like I said, as long as it's fairly warm I prefer getting wet. Different if it's winter - then I accept the sweat and wear the jacket.

If you are going along at a good pace then you will keep warm during the summer even if wet.

If you insist on wearing waterproofs then get the thinest/lightest and most breathable cycle specific items that you can afford. Don't even think about walking jackets and overtrousers - too heavy, too hot and the wrong cut for on the bike rding 100 miles per day

Maybe I am coming here from a different direction. First of all 90% of my kit has to multi purpose, so the walking headlight doubles as my front cyling lamp, all my shirts are used for both walking and cycling as are my trousers and so on. Now my average walking speed on my own over 20 miles is 3-4 MPH, with a group it is down to 2.5 or less. On the bike I average 9-10 MPH (very rarly 15-16) but have never cycled with a group (though I am often overtaken by an elderly female speed freak). So when I get wet I stay wet and overal I would sooner be wet and warm which you are in the summer, than wet and cold which you are in the winter at my speeds unless you are well covered. So is there a light weight multi purpose set of waterproofs on the market
