With autumn creeping up on us and my new found enthusiasm for cycling showing no signs of dulling, I thought I'd better invest in a decent shell. My mountain jacket is too sail like.
I've had jackets made of all manner of fabrics over the years. Gore Text. Everything from old 3ply to Pro Shell, sympatex, Event, Hydro dry to name but a few. I'm currently using a Nikwax Paramo jacket which performs really well but is not exactly lightweight. I have a brilliant Mountain Hardware, Conduit Jacket which is really light and very breathable but sail like on a bike.
Firstly does anyone know if there are any cycle jackets made from conduit? Failing that could someone recommend a serviceable, preferably high vis, jacket for around the £100 - £120 bracket.

Thanks,

Mick

Assuming it's for cycling rather than general use or mountaineering, I'd not get a waterproof at all. The windproof fleece style jackets from various makes are semi waterproof, and you seem to dry off any water that come through with your own body heat - particularly if you wear a synthetic "wicking" vesty thing or similar undernerneath, rather than an old t-shirt. i've an altura hi viz one which is great at mid price - seemed a bit pricey for a basic looking fleecey thing , but works very well to be fair. I also got a de-luxe Assos windblock one as well - good bit more money, but on special offer as "last year's colour" or summat - it's quite a bit nicer, and slightly better. Neither is so say waterproof.

For general anorak or mountain use, get a Paramo - but wouldn't be my choice for the bike - genuinely outstanding though - and far far better than goretex et al.

I found a cheap jacket with pit vents works better on the bike than pro-shell goretex and i carry it with me for when it rains , I never wear a hard shell when its dry .

As someone who always runs extra hot, I've never found any jacket that didn't get me as wet from sweat as I would have been in the rain without it. I prefer a rainproof gillet, .

Altura night vision for me. It's a bit bigger than it should be (weight loss) but that works in my favour by giving more airflow. I can't think of anything else i would want to use on a cold wet ride.

Hi Mick

Conduit is Mountain Hardware's own brand for the breathable, waterproof membrane in their jackets. So, unless they have a cycling range the answer to your first question is no. But Gore is recognised as having decent alternative.

I've followed the route of most of the above suggestions and went with windproof soft shell too. Opted for a MTB soft shell from Bontrager because they have a slightly more relaxed fit which accommodates by pot belly without it being too obtrusive, if you know what I mean. Mine's not hi viz, so can't recommend it, but Bontrager have a decent range of well received jackets within your budget.

For cold weather, you can't beat an altura nightvision evo.
Not one of those silly custard looking ones, get one of the cooler colours... black and to a lesser extent, red.

I have the altura, must admit it's been worn 3 times since purchase it's normally in the backpack for emergencies, otherwise I just prefer to run without wearing a jacket i overheat without any extra help!
