My wafty town bike has a front dynamo hub with M9x1 axle threads, the rear being a IGH with 3/8"x26tpi axles.

I was a bit shocked to find that there are no washers separating the nuts from the ally frame and fork; resulting in paint loss and mess, especially at the plain nut under the bell-crank / shifter unit on the rear hub.

I'd like to add some washers but am having issues finding any; neither M9 nor hub-specific washers seem to be a thing. If it comes to it I can always drill out some M8 items to fit (and tbh these would probably have a more appropriate OD anyway).

Is it typical that hub nuts aren't fitted with any form of washer? Can anyone think of any issues that fitting them might cause? I'm aware that if spacing the gear shifter out further along the axle I'll have to adjust it to keep the indexing correc but I'm hoping that I should have enough adjustment to accomodate a thin washers..

Any thoughts much appreciated, ta ;)

Are the hub nuts serrated on the inner face? If so, normally fitted without washers.

Therein lies a story! The originals have an integral (18mm?) flange with serrations but they required replacement and those I've bought (Shimano) have a plain inner face and a contact area defined by the nuts' 15mm AF hex, so realistically 15mm (so a lot less contact area and another reason for fitting washers).

I can't find any washers listed on the site I bought the nuts from (SJS) and they seem pretty hot on components.. looks like I'd best get some 8mm items for modification unless anyone can suggest some viable alternatives.

It never ends!

How about nuts with an integrated (captive, rotating) washer? These are usually called "track nuts". SJS have some, including 3/8". Most modern hubs use 9mm (front) or 10mm (rear). The Dura Ace ones are lovely, but expensive!

Thanks - wasn't aware of such nuts but I've already bought the Shimano replacements now; it's a budget bike and I've already spent more than I want so it's a cheapo solution or bust I'm afraid!

Just ring up SJS they are usually pretty helpful and should advise. Alternatively I am sure you could easily find some suitable washers on Ebay.

Thanks - I did bother them recently about something else actually and their response was good (although it remains to be seen if their advice was correct!).

ebay didn't immediately throw much up in the way of washers, but I'll keep looking and worst-case it wouldn't be the end of the world to enlarge some M8 items; especially for the back nut under the shifter as this will need to be modified to clear the bracket for the axle stop (or whatever it's called ).

Ta - a pair of these might have made more sense than the ones I bought - have squirrelled away the link incase I get no joy with the existing ones
