I recently changed the chainset for a 38 53 i think, which i had away in a box somewhere. now the chain is rubbing the front mech when in first on the cassette.
i cannot loosen the adjustment screws off anymore, so what can down about that?
also there seems to be a buckle or warp on the chainset. now is that likely to be the arms of the chainset or the chainring. can i just bend the chainring back gently with some malgrips?

nooooooooooooo  don't bend the chainset  too late !..

It might be you have some grit or something between the chainring faces where the fixing holes are.
I would dismantle the chainset completly. Clean all the holes and faces around the fixing holes of the chainrings.
Check the fixing hole faces on the crank carefully you might need to use a little careful filing if the rings don't sit in the cranks easily as they may be riding high on one spider arm.

Its unlikely your chainrings will be bent but check on a flat surface like a sheet of glass.
If your crank arms were bent it would have shown up with your old ring fitted.

thats a good suggestion Mr P . Worth trying the cranks on in all positions and giving them a spin.

I'd have thought if its a square taper chainset, you'd be very hard pushed to get it wrong mounting it.
Although it's come out of a box..is the chainset new. Have you tightened the fixing bolts correctly ?

I have straightened bent chainrings before...not 100%, but to an acceptable degree.

Hard, but not impossible. Put it this way, I'd want to check that before I started bending metal!

Quite right MrPig...
