If I remember correctly the 5600, left hand shifter has a factory fault so they fail more often than other models.

the 5600 LH lever doesn't have a fault as such but.................... Shimano decided to make the 5600 mk1 LH lever double OR triple compatible. What Shimano didn't think about was the number of people out there that can't use STIs correctly. Basically, when using the lever as a double, if you are already in the large chainring, and you are stupid enough to force another shift in an attempt to get the large chainring again, the internal mechanism would break (Shimano didn't think anyone would be that stupid but they were very wrong), hence within 12 months they had to change the design.

I see..... what it's obvious to me is that according to how you describe things there were an awful lot of very stupid people and I think I'm right to guess you were in the clever group ;)

The last one I broke did so on a downshift to the 39 chainring. The insides of the lever had, according to the LBS, "disintegrated"

that was the issue described by Shimano written in my own words from memory - obviously Shimano didn't called their customers idiots! I have never had problems with my 5600 shifters.

it was probably less than 0.1% of units sold that failed, but enough for Shimano to quickly roll out a new design
