I haven't ridden my bike for a while and would like to get back into cycling, after being told by my nurse I'm slightly overweight. I have a curvature of the spin, and I am worried that my back will give me pain if I try and get back into it again and put me off. What's the best way of doing it please?

In short you are going to have to ride your bike and find out. Just take it easy and build up distances and intensities slowly.

There is once called Cycling Fitness or Cycling Active or something like that, people have said its quite a good read.

Aura,

Welcome

Firstly I would check with Nurse/Dr that it is OK to get back on your bike. If you get the OK there then perhaps a custom bike fit would help identify any areas that may help with avoiding the back pain.

Buying something new (however small) tends to (for me anyway) spur me on a bit for example I must try out those new shoes/jersey/gloves/water bottle..................bar end caps.

As Rob3ert states get back in slow and steady also hooking up with like minded people perhaps a cycling club makes the experience a lot more enjoyable. It doesn't have to be local race club the CTC has local member groups that cater for more leisurely rides and some groups can also cater for those that wish to up the pace a bit.

Hi AT - I originally got into cycling because of a heel problem but was a bit hestitant because I didn't know if the heel would stand up to it.

So went and bought a real cheap second hand bike and tried it out. It's the best way to find out.

Hey, Aura, welcome to CC. :hello:

Not exactly the same issue but I get knee problems if I don't ride frequently. Is there a chance, however slim, that finding a bike which is just the right shape for you will allow regular, gentle movements which would do you some good?

I'm afraid I don't know much about curvature of the spine, but I'd definitely be looking for advice from a medical professional who knew about your particular issues.

I'm fairly certain that you'll be able to find a bike which didn't give you pain. Somewhere between the hunched-up sports bike with dropped bars and the sit-up-and-beg Dutch style there will be a flat-barred, relaxed road bike which is just begging to take you for a ride.

So, go and speak with your doctor, then, if they give a positive response, go and speak with your Local Bike Shop.

Most cycle magazines tend to the higher end of each market (road, mountain etc) but Cycling Active tends to be a bit more real world.

you could even go over to the dark side and try a recumbent!
