who would chain the bike that high on the lampost anyway?

Could be an insurance scam? claim on all the parts?
Not a bad idea for those feeling crooked - get double the parts then fleabay it.

Seen it done a fair few times. When folks can't find bike stands or skinny lamposts. There was a lovely Fixed Bianchi shackled in this fashion in Soho a couple of weeks back.

I must hold my hands up. When i was a lot younger I was stupid enough to lock my bike up to a sign at my work (it was about 6-7 foot high though). When I came out my bike was gone! I went to tell the security who just laughed at me and handed over my bike. I asked how on earth they got it. They simply picked up the sign which was just staked in the earth....doh!

I have a similar pic of a diamond frame (and absolutely nothing else, certainly not chain rings) locked to a Sheffield stand in Vienna.
And I'm off there in July.....

I've had a few bikes nicked in the past, but all but 1 I got back (though one did get nicked again, so it doesn't really count). First time was in Moss Side. Witnessed one of the thieves going into a house and leaving my bike outside. So I got it back. Another time, a thieve left my bike locked up in town with a combination lock on it. My sister took less than ten seconds to work it out and I got my bike back. Unfortunately that bike got nicked again. It was only a secondhand £5 bike though with no gears.

Love how the thieves felt the need to lock up the stolen bike !

I am a little amazed that Mr Cameron does not have a security detail that can keep an eye on his bike while he pops into a shop
