I am 48 year old newbie Road cyclist, so not used to the body positioning, i recently foolishly cycled 30 miles, most against a head wind, since then i have a problem with sore ribs, back , sternum and basically my stomach has not felt right at all, hence no exercise at the moment and a trip to the docs probably tomorrow. Is it possible i have just committed the cardinal sin and gone to far to soon and with probably incorrect bike positioning.

Any replies more than welcone

well doing a 30 miler straight off is not advised your body needs to adjust bit by bit im not surprised your sore take it easy and go at it slowly:biggrin:

Yes sounds like a classic case of overdoing it when your not used to it. Plenty of rest then start again SLOWLY  shorter distances to begin with, and check your bike is adjusted to fit you.
But still get checked over by your docs too.

Welcome Wilf. I must say I am amazed that you managed to cycle so far on a first attempt. When I returned to cycling after a couple of decades away from it, my first 100 yard trip up the road was sheer purgatory. I felt my rear end was forcing its way to the top of my skullxx(

My first proper ride was 10 miles to work - then a painful 10 back again, and abandon all hope of getting on the bike for another 10 days or so!

I just last week did my first road run of 2009, 27 miles, without any soreness, though a bit stiff in the legs...this is 4 years after the first 10 miles though; and my best so far, in the last 4 years, was 60+.

I think you did too much, too soon, too - take it easy

lay on your front on a bed and have someone of your prefered gender sit on the small of your back

works for me when my back is hurting a bit from biking.

Now that is just unfair to those of us who can not call on such a person

in which case, lay on your front and push gently up with your arms allowing your back to arch stretching out your front and forcing your back into shape

30 miles, brilliant! I started at 44, cycled 1 mile to the post office and seriously considered ringing my wife to come and collect me back in the car:biggrin:

After a few weeks doing of short trips I had a brainstorm and did a 40 mile round trip and suffered, just like you.

30 miles on a first run out is quite something. But yes, too much too soon methinks.

I'm returning to cycling after a 15 year break and did a hilly 23 yesterday after 3 weeks of nothing more than 12 to 14 miles per ride and today my right knee is suffering. Think i stepped it up too much too soon, without building a proper base.
