Wahoo Roam 2 for dummies !!

Finally took the plunge and switched over to a wahoo roam a few questions:-

1.is it possible to configure the roam to start recording just by moving - I know it auto resumes mid ride. But when starting off although it gives you stats - it doesn't actually record unless you press start ?

2.Should it pair with the app on your phone automatically or do you have to open the app and search for the roam before riding ?

3. It makes a lot of references to workouts - are these just rides in normal speak ?

4.im getting more radar errors (varia RTL 515) then I got on my edge explore - not really a problem as it bounces back pretty quickly - any ideas what might cause these ?

5.How do I get Strava live segments to work - do I have to be following a route ?

I use it just for routes, so not sure of all the answers

1. Don't think so

2. You can ride without the phone at all, but if you want to use the features from pairing, I think you need to pair from the phone.

3. As I understand it... "routes" are rides. "Workouts" are a fitness/ training thing I've never used.

4. No idea

5. Sorry, not used that. But the "summit segment" feature works with or without routes - it guesses which way you're going if you're not using routes. Maybe Strava live works the same.

1. No. it'll remind you to press start if you don't, but it won't actually start recording.

2. No need to have the phone paired unless you're using the tracking facility. You only need to open the phone application; no need to search again as the pairing is retained and they'll find each other.

3. Yes, a 'workout' is a 'ride you record'. (Routes are a thing you follow, and you don't have to be recording a ride/workout to be following a route. You also don't have to be following a route to be recording a ride / workout.)

4. Weird. I'd have thought the errors originated in the Varia and that the head unit was irrelevant :-\ My Roam V2 and RTL515 gives an error about once in a thousand kilometres or so, but I'm not on busy roads.

5. Firstly, you have to have linked your Wahoo to Strava. Having done that, there's a toggle in the 'top' page of the Settings menu, quite a long way down the list in the 'Ride' section, to use 'Strava live segments', or some such. That needs to be on. And *then* you have to have 'starred' the segments you want to see in Strava. No, you do not have to be following a route. (I'm not sure whether you need to have a workout active as I've never tried that, but why wouldn't you, so that's probably not relevant.) .

I hope that helps.

As above. The radar error thing is interesting and usually occurs at the same points on my rides. I’ve not yet pinned it down to what causes it, there’s nothing visible. I’d presume it was down to the radar mot the headset.

@kingrollo I've used the Elemnt, forerunner to the Roam, for years. I've recently bought a Roam.

On the pairing aspect I find it best to boot up the Roam before opening the app. 99% of my rides the app is closed. I only use the app to load my chosen route.

I like to choose my routes from the head unit - but haven't tried following a route on the wahoo yet. Not sure if the lack of road names might prove an issue.

I find the endless scrolling a PIA! 🤣

The Roam doesn't show road names? I didn't know this, my much loved Elemnt did. I shall investigate. If Wahoo have removed the feature I'll be very disappointed in the company. A backward step.

I only got the Roam because my Elemnt was totalled in an RTA.

Slightly irrelevant info: My Varia goes bonkers at one particular point (I use a Garmin head unit), must be something external interfering with it. So that says that there are places that spook Varias regardless of head unit. Doesn't explain why you experience it more with Wahoo though.
