Wahoo Bolt keeps taking me off road

I love my Wahoo Element Bolt and have used it for years- especially the ‘take me to’ function which has led to me finding really cool routes - however increasingly it takes me off road (uses the most popular routes especially canals) is there anyway to set it to road cycling only? (Or vice Versa when I’m my mountain bike)?
I have added road bike in profile settings but makes no difference. Thanks

I have got the old Bolt and so this may not help.

With my Bolt, all it does is lead the way. The route is done in RWGPS, Strava, Komoot or whatever app you are using.

The surface I want to ride on can be changed in that app in Settings. It has nothing to do with the Bolt.

What app are you planning your routes on?

As per Steve, if it’s the original Bolt (monochrome screen) then the routing is not done by the GPS but by the service you connect it to (Strava, Ride with GPS etc). Thus the problem for you lies in those online services.

Monica is referring to the "Take me to" feature where the Wahoo finds a route from where you currently are to a new location. It's not following a pre-loaded route. So the Wahoo is making the decisions using the maps you have installed. I've only used it once and I don't think my phone was paired at the time. There should be an option to use paved roads only. If there isn't, you can ask Wahoo to add one. They will seriously listen to you. I thought this was an interesting question so I put a support request in to Wahoo. I'll post when I get a response.

The Bolt V1 doesn’t have on board routing. It can only show what’s been sent via the phone app. The problem is not the Bolt V1.

The ‘Take me anywhere’ option is run from the Wahoo companion app, whilst connected to the Bolt unit via Bluetooth. You use the Wahoo app to create the route, which then appears on the unit once you have created it. It’s like doing it Strava, RWGPS or any of the others except it avoids the need for synchronising from one account to another - it all happens natively. From memory though there is no surface type configuration.

This is what I got back from Wahoo support - modified for a Bolt v2. It does not use the app. If you have a v1 this does not apply.
1. Go to the map page.
2. Click the left button (...)
3. Select Choose a route
4. Scroll down to surface
5. Click the right button until the surface is set to road.
