I've sen reviews of the Range Rover, conversion & it looks very intriguing
What is particularly interesting is that the electric motors drive the gearbox, rather than directly! (it just replaces the petrol engine)

This is the company in question

Another company has converted a Morris 1000, it must have its RPM limited, however the thought of it seeing 10,000RPM+ in 1st does makes me wonder of the possibities…………….

Their website does show a Volvo 145 estate, now that's an intriguing one to adapt

1. I'm still waiting for the new series of Diesel Brothers to start though!!
(equally 'Sin City Motors' too)

Wheeler Dealers did a Maserati that had been converted with a DC motor and lead/acid batteries in the 80's, Ed china fitted an A/C drive motor along with the A/C chopper box, controller & Li-Ion batteries, the motor was direct into the gearbox and it went like a scalded cat with a fire work tied to it's tail, the A/C drive motors don't suffer a loss of performance no matter how much weight they are moving as D/C motors do, and will send a small amount of current back into the battery when regen braking

The traction controller will electronically speed limit the drive motor, an A/C drive motor left to it's own devices would destroy a brand new car gearbox within yards, bear in mind that an electric fork lift could be weighing 7 to 8 tonnes, & have a lift/carrying capacity of 5 tonnes, some even more, and be able to ascend a slope with no loss of speed, hence a 1 tonne car will go like an Exocet missile when correctly geared

Good afternoon,

I am curious about how seriously they take the conversion.

Some of the Wheeler Dealer mods didn't look particularly impressive, I remember one where they made a sump guard, bolted in on and the bolt holes were so close to the edge that there were washers "hanging" over the edge of the metal.

Are we going to see that the conversion considers the structural strength of the battery pack, the outcome of various crashes, and consideration of any cooling/heating that the batteries may need?

The early and possibly still, Tesla Model 3s ran an high current cable somewhere where the fire brigade would cut if they wanted to take the roof off after an accident, without any warning stickers etc.

Or will it be "there is some space here, that's where the battery will go"!

If you look at the Aston Martin e-Rapide that never went into production, they bolted the batteries into the engine bay, but they were from Williams Advanced Engineering and looked very similar to their Formula E battery.

Bye

Ian

That Fiat 500 was gorgeous
Both pre & post conversion

LR Defender this week, possibly the white 110CSW, seen in the background?
The Fiat was perfect for it's intended use, be interested to see how they convert the Defender, especially with fitting the batteries, perhaps they'll put some where the fuel tank should be and then down each side where LPG tanks were usually placed on V8 models with plating to protect them off road, perhaps in the engine bay too, I doubt they would deliberately loose the rear seating/luggage space if they can avoid it.
I remember reading in one of the L-R comics about a Series 2A I think it was that had a DC electric motor driving into the transfer box power take off, the back was full of lead/acid cells, which at the time must have been at least 30 years old, they didn't have a clue why it stank when they tried to charge it and wouldn't run the motor either, I think it still had an engine in it so they took it to a fork truck workshop to find out why it didn't work on electric, nothing followed it up, I bet they nearly passed out when they found out what replacement cells would cost!

@DRM

Yes, there was one in America (Utah??) that was used for 'rock crawling' & was a DIY electric, probably in a mid 90's LR magazine
I think this one was believed to be an experimental LWB 2A in MOD spec, some kind of early hybrid I think L-R thought the MOD might buy it, it was in the UK and I'm sure Craddocks had bought it.

@DRM

Land Rover themselves also produced a few (can't recall how many) 'E-110'
One went to the Eden Project, to haul the visitor carriages down into the ex China Clay quarry, where it is
The regenerative braking meant that service brakes were barely used

Well the latest episode with the BMW 1602 was a good one, but i can't help thinking the owner had arranged for the conversion to be done back to front, so the car was stripped to a shell, then the body work repaired, now the bit i don't get was a £6000 paint job, which was stunning, then sending it in for conversion/rebuilding, I would have wanted the the bare shell to fabricate the brackets, battery boxes, motor mounts, then drill the holes for the power cables etc, then paint it & build it up, also when they were putting the drive motor in with the thing swinging off lifting straps wrapped around the forks had me cringing, I've seen the edges of the forks cut through straps, and also slide off which would have wrecked the paint work and bodywork, they would be better investing in a spreader bar and some shackles.
But the finished car was a belter.
