Extracts from the 1938 Clarion handbook. My Dad was in the SW Lancashire Clarion before the war.

Great nostalgia there. I always think of the Viz comics when I see those ads

Another one from 1940 - The result sheet from the Southport RC open 25 on 9th JUne 1940.
(Have posted bits of it before, but not the full results.)

Demonstrates how the handicap used to work.

Firstly some names
Larry Ross - was the scratch man, but was DNS

11th - Vic Ward - my dad ,probably on an 81" fixed. His fastest pre war time.
12th - Eddie Soens - A name you should recognise as the great Liverpudlian frame builder and coach to sone great cyclists. Also a relative to one of the forum members
15th - Alan Barker - Son of Harry Barker, one of the founders of the Warrington RC. Met Alan in person on a couple of occasions and we both rode an event on the O2 once. Also the father of a forum member / ex member?
64th - R Holmes - winner of the handicap award. His actual time was only 1:12:16, but he was given a 10min handicap and his net time of 1:2:16 was the fastest.
73rd - C Cartwright. My guess is that this was the great Cyril Cartwright at 16 yrs old. A club mate of Reg Harris and went on to represent the country at world level and was one of the first to get under the hour for a 25.

Are any of the other names recognisable - dad's or grandad's?

I can't remember what these were from exactly, some sort of sales catalogue from the 1930's I think. "As ridden by" makes for interesting reading. Who was The Shahzada?

Fascinating stuff! I suspect they're earlier than the 1930s, possibly even pre-1900.

Well, write it down boy ......
Could well be which would fit in with the prediction by @Poacher . I think a friend lent me the catalogue, I'll ask if it had a front, or any other way of dating.

It would depend on the date of the publication; but THE Shahzada generally referred to the crown prince of Afghanistan who came on a state visit to Britain in 1895. He even visited Silloth in Cumbria!
Which dates your bicycle catalogue to around that time, as confirmed by the references to Prince Henry of Prussia and other well-known-at-the-time notables.
