I have just acquired this vintage dawes galaxh touring frame to convert to a sngle speed or fixed wheel. haven't really decided what to do yet. Looking for a bir of information regarding the age of the bike and what the original spec of the bike would have been. I think it is an early 1970s but some of you out there might be able to get more exact dates for me and ehat sort of bottom bracket, chain ring would fit this. Also is there anywhere i can get the original decals as I would like to repaint etc.
I will try and post some images for you to have a look at.

thanks
peter

Would anyone know where I might be able to get the paint product code. Have been toying with the idea of changing the colour but to keep it in its original style the brown would probably be the best to stick to.

Looks identical model & colour (although not same size) to one I rebuilt for my son. Colour was rather like something British Leyland used in the 1970's... so easy to find under "Rover" group in Halfords. Was very good match so i just masked off the decals and over-sprayed.

Since that pic was taken I replaced the brakes with Alhongas deep drops and the orignal 27" wheels with some spare 700c I had. Did him for a JoGLE this summer.

Thanks Pppete for the reply and also the brilliant photo. Yes it looks exactly the same so I will go to Halfords when looking for the paint. Could you tell me what bottom bracket, crank set you are using on your bike. I have no rear derailleur hanger on my bike which was part of the reason for buying it. It is solely for single speed and taking the kids out and about the town.

Thanks again,

Peter

Yours has an earlier badge, but my late 70s Super Galaxy came as stock with:
27 x 1 1/8 wheels 28-630
SR stem
Campag hubs
Weinmann Vainqueur 610 front brakes
Weinmann Vainqueur 750 rear brakes
Sun Tour Cyclone derailleur
TA cranks 36/48 chainwheel
Maillard skewers
Brookes B17 saddle
Kyokuto Top Run pedals
Sturmer Archer clips

If that's any help.

PpPete,

Would you be able to take a close up photo of the reynolds 531 decal so I can source the original one as I believe reynolds made over 200 different stickers for 531 frames.

as you can see from my link below my decal is very much damaged and is hard to get the one I'm looking for.

Thanks again,

Peter

Sorry for the delayed reply - I dont come into "special Interests" very often.....

Here's a close up of mine:

also not in very good condition

However I "think" it's similar to this:

r2.jpg
Except it should say "Frame Tubing" across the bottom - rather than "Butted Frame Tubing"

The second pic is off a Dawes Renown BTW.

Mine also had no hanger so I had to buy an adapter to put on modern mech on. I stripped down the old BB (caged bearing race fortunately -rather than loose bearings) and re-used it. The crankset is a vintage 52/42 salvaged from another bike of (I think) similar vintage.

We do have another Galaxy of very slightly more recent vintage (had a hanger and bottle cage bolts - which the brown one lacked).... on that one I've spread the drop outs to 135mm, but a modern wheel in, UN54 BB and a Tiagra 4400 triple chainset, which all works fine. These frames are SO adaptable.... and robust (both the aforementioned bikes completed a JoGLE this year)

All depends on what you want to spend really.. my fixed frame is similar vintage, took the 52 ring off , padded the
chain ring bolts out with filed-down B&Q washers, freewheel off and replaced with fixed sprocket, then just played with BB spindle length until I got chainline more or less right. Ended up with 110.5mm IIRC, but dont take that as a guide, because my frame is very slightly out of true (bent seat stay)

Have fun !

I never faff with washers to make a double chain ring bolt work with a single ring.

Take the 52 ring that you are no longer using and cut off the tabs with the bolt hole in, then file each one down a bit, it fit's the crank arm spider perfectly.

Heres some info on the decals from Reynolds own site.

Decal History and heres how to order them.

When I had my Galaxy resprayed by Mercian, they were able to put the original reynolds stickers on for me, (not the ´renovated`stickers that technically they should have!) So that might be another potential source for the original stickers.

Hi, I just acquired almost exactly the same Galaxy as yours. How did your repaint go? Did you find out any more about the age of it?I am fairly sure that these are the same age frame, I do know that the first Galaxy was built in 1971. Mine is too going to be built up as a fixed gear so I am interested to hear from you about which components you have used.
